A short film that delineates making home and how my practice sits within that through the restoration of my family home. A strenuous process transmuted into lightness and joy. Through the curated exposition of a space that once held a lot of pain, it transformed into a place of purpose and peace. In exercising my architectural design experience, a home restoration practice formed. Eka reframes home as both a tangible place and an evolving internal state — carried, rebuilt, and shared.
One hundred handcrafted barkcloth paper postcards reveal curated imagery of this family home and a poetic verse that captures intimate sentiments on homing. The postcards signify a long standing collaboration between my studio and seasoned barkcloth paper maker, artist and friend — Shiela Nakitende. Each piece unique, individual and a distinct work of art.
Eka Floating Table, the first piece of shared furniture, weathered and was sculpted by nature over a period of three years. The mahogany formed a distressed chocolate patterned patina supported by repurposed steel i-sections reflective of resilience. Designed and made by studio Isabella isabeau in collaboration with longtime artisan and friend, Innocent Baguma.
Eka debuted at the Building Beyond Symposium Cycle three at Kunstinstituut Melly, Rotterdam on 28th September 2024.
